Before you build a mobile app, answer these six questions

Mobile is the most expensive surface to build and maintain. Six questions that determine whether you need an app or a better mobile website.

Mobile practice

Mobile applications carry costs web projects do not: two platform targets, store review cycles, device fragmentation testing, and release management that cannot simply be rolled back. That is why our Mobile App MVP Package starts at $15,000 while a comparable web application starts considerably lower. Before committing, six questions settle whether an app is genuinely required.

1. What does an app do that a mobile website cannot?

The legitimate answers are specific: offline operation, push notifications, camera or sensor access beyond browser capability, background processing, biometric authentication, or presence in a store where customers search for solutions like yours.

If the answer is "it feels more professional" or "competitors have one," a well-built responsive web application usually serves better at a fraction of the cost and without store dependency. We have advised clients toward web builds on this basis more than once.

2. Will it be used where connectivity is unreliable?

This is the strongest technical case for native mobile. Field technicians, drivers, construction sites, rural service areas — places where web-only tools fail. Offline-first architecture with conflict resolution is genuinely hard to do well and is where mobile earns its cost.

Be honest about it though: offline capability adds meaningful engineering effort. If connectivity is merely occasionally slow rather than absent, a resilient web application may suffice.

3. Who is the user, and are they compelled or voluntary?

Internal workforce apps have a captive audience and different success criteria — adoption is mandated, so usability affects efficiency rather than install rates. Consumer apps must earn their install and survive the roughly 70% of apps abandoned within a week.

This changes the product entirely. Internal apps optimise for task speed. Consumer apps must justify their place on a home screen every week.

4. Native or cross-platform?

For most business applications, cross-platform (React Native) delivers both platforms from one codebase with acceptable performance and substantially lower cost. Native becomes the right answer for heavy device integration, sophisticated graphics, background processing, or platform-specific interaction depth.

We recommend based on requirements rather than preference, and the rationale goes in writing so the decision can be revisited.

5. Who will maintain it?

Apps are not finished at launch. Operating systems update annually and can break functionality. Store policies change and can block releases. Certificates expire. An unmaintained app degrades and eventually stops working entirely.

Budget for ongoing maintenance from the outset — typically 15–20% of build cost annually. An app you cannot afford to maintain is worse than no app, because it becomes a visible, broken representation of your brand.

6. How will you handle store submission and review?

Both stores review submissions and both reject for reasons that are not always predictable. First submissions commonly require two or three cycles. Build review time into the timeline and expect it. Account setup, listing assets, privacy declarations and review responses are real work, which is why we include store management in our engagements rather than leaving it to clients.

A shortcut worth considering

Build the responsive web application first, instrument it, and observe actual mobile usage. If the data shows sustained mobile engagement and specific friction that only native capability resolves, you then have evidence for the app investment and a working API to build it against. If it does not, you have saved a substantial amount and lost nothing.

What actually belongs in a SaaS MVP

Most MVPs are too big in features and too small in engineering. The correction is uncomfortable: cut the feature list, but do not cut multi-tenancy, billing or auth.
